Behavorial Health Programs
Despite being considered a “model minority,” Asians experience higher levels of depressive symptoms than whites, according a 2003 study by the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. They also utilize mental health care the least among all racial minority groups, regardless of age, gender and location, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Reasons cited for the lack of care include stigma, shame, financial hardship, expectations of health and language barriers. When Asians do seek mental health care, they are likely to be misdiagnosed as "problem-free."
AHSC provides a safe and culturally sensitive place for Asians who seek mental health care. Our program is a culturally competent and linguistically appropriate service that is offered in Cantonese, English, Korean, Mandarin or Taiwanese. All staff members of the mental health program are multilingual and multicultural professionals who have extensive experience in the field.
We are certified through contracts with Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare and the Providence Health & Services, and we comply with state and county regulations in providing clinical and mental health services. Our program has achieved significant success in its 24 years and was recognized by a Multnomah County commissioner as "an ideal example of a culturally appropriate site for delivery of mental health care."
