Diabetes
More than 20 million people in the United States have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. In particular, women of minority racial groups are at least twice as likely to have the disease as women who are white. In 2005, 1.5 million new cases were diagnosed in people age 20 and older. Also, two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke.
With assistance from the American Diabetes Association, AHSC uses culturally and linguistically appropriate ways to promote diabetes awareness. Education methods include classes, support groups, a resource library with Internet access and printed materials. Funding has come from sources including the Elizabeth Furse Diabetes Grant Program.
